Reflections on Essence Twins

I share this story because sometimes people expect their essence twin to be the love of their life if that soul is incarnate and in the "right package."

My essence twin is a fellow sage who is an acquaintance. We met around 1976 when we were both members of a spiritual group and living in nearby towns. I was in college getting a degree in vocal music education; she was studying to become an opera singer. People commented that we looked like brother and sister.

I had just started communicating consciously with spirit, and was told we were "supposed" to get married eventually, although there was no relationship or even physical attraction between us (my orientation has been more gay, although at the time I still thought that that might change).

I graduated in 1978 and moved to Colorado to be near the spiritual group's headquarters. She visited the next year and we had dinner together. We didn't know each other very well, but she said that I understood her better than anyone she'd ever met, and later expressed a strong desire to also move to Colorado. However, her parents were ill, she's in caution mode, and was afraid to leave them, even though her twin brother said that he'd take care of them and that she should go. The following year, she decided to move to Seattle rather than Colorado. I freaked out and naively told her that spirit said that we were supposed to be together, which freaked her out, and she stopped communicating.

However, after I moved to New York in 1985, she wrote and said that it was her dream to come to New York, take part in the Metropolitan Opera auditions and study with her old voice teacher. She timidly asked if she could stay with me. I saw this as Spirit continuing to try to get us together, and said yes. However, she again chickened out. News accounts had her convinced that all us New Yorkers got mugged on a weekly basis, and phobia (the negative pole of caution) again took charge.

She figured prominently in my past-life therapy work on my most significant past life. We were married and I loved her, but she was very churchy and wasn't sexually available, so I had an affair, in which I spoke bitterly against the Church. When I wouldn't go off with this other woman, she turned me in as a heretic, and I was tortured and murdered by the Church. My essence twin has continued to be churchy in this lifetime, which is a strong button-pusher for me; I still have much anger toward the Church, even though I also have, like her, a "goody two-shoes" strain in me (more prominent when I was younger).

I took the initiative to see her the last time I was in Oregon in 1993. I had written her about my channeling when I'd first begun. She had thought it was weird, but the year before, her beloved twin brother, with whom she lived, at age 40 had finally revealed himself as being gay (which she had also previously thought was weird) and started dating a channel! So she was now open to channeling, and I channeled for her, her brother, his lover, and a friend of mine. Michael's topic was releasing blocks, very apropos for all present. She also had begun working with a therapist for the first time, and it looked like she was beginning to break out of her boxes. My visit seemed to be fortuitously timed to give her some tools for releasing her limitations. That was our last contact. I've let go of trying to stay in touch, since she doesn't reciprocate.
