The Soul Types (or Seven Roles)By DAVID GREGG
Explore Your Unique Type of Soul: The Spiritual Archetypes That Embody Us All
The Michael Teachings
Before each of us begins our incarnational cycle on the planet, we choose one of Seven Roles (or Soul Types) which serve as the blueprint for who we are, what special abilities we possess, and how we interact with others.
There are seven primary types of soul: Servers, Artisans, Warriors, Scholars, Sages, Priests, and Kings.
You can only be one soul type for an entire reincarnational journey. If, for example, you are initially assigned the role of a Sage, all your experiences will be shaped by that inherent Sageness.
The Soul Types as Archetypal Energies
Each soul type carries its own set of qualities, talents, and perspectives, contributing to the intricate mosaic of human diversity. Thus, In the human population, there are seven fundamental categories of people, representing different archetypal energies, and each with distinctive characteristics and a range of contributions that can be added to the collective human experience. To illustrate, consider this:
Imagine a bustling city with its diverse inhabitants and their respective roles. In this city, there are different types of individuals, each contributing their unique talents and skills to make the city function effectively. Just like a beehive, where bees of varying sizes and skills work together harmoniously, the city thrives due to the collaboration of different people.
In this analogy, there are architects and engineers who design and construct the city's buildings, ensuring they are structurally sound. Artists and performers bring creativity and beauty to the city through their work. Public servants, such as police officers and firefighters, safeguard the well-being of the community. Teachers and mentors impart knowledge and nurture the younger generation. Business leaders and entrepreneurs drive economic growth and innovation. Healthcare professionals provide care and healing. Finally, community organizers and social workers foster social cohesion and address societal challenges.
Each soul type then brings a unique contribution to the tapestry of human experience. By embracing our soul type, we unlock our true potential and live authentically, contributing to the greater good of ourselves and the world around us.

Distribution of Roles (or Soul Types)
According to Yarbro, roughly twenty-five percent of the earth’s population (and the sentient population of the entire cosmos) are Servers, twenty-two percent are Artisans, seventeen percent are Warriors, fourteen percent are Scholars, ten percent are Sages, eight percent are Priests, and four percent are Kings.
This follows the order of most ordinal to most cardinal, with the neutral role, scholar, comprising about one-seventh of the population. So about sixty-four percent of the population has an ordinal role, and twenty-two percent has a cardinal role, with, again, fourteen percent having the neutral role, scholar. On any planet, there may be historical periods during which these percentages vary.
The Four Axes (or Universal Qualities)
The soul types are classified as being on one of four axes, or dominant universal qualities: INSPIRATION, EXPRESSION, ACTION, and ASSIMILATION (or neutral).
Servers and Priests are Inspirational roles (the inspiration axis relates to the inner world);
Artisans and Sages are Expressive roles (the expression axis relates to bringing the inner world into the outer);
Warriors and Kings are Action roles (the action axis relates to doing in the outer world), and
Scholars are the Assimilative role (the assimilation axis is neutral; it provides objectivity and a resource for the other axes).
The axes are fairly self-explanatory: a role or overleaf on the inspiration axis, for example, has an inspirational quality; in other words, it has to do with the inner world. (A definition of inspiration is "the act of drawing in.") The expression axis has to do with manifesting the inner world -- for example, communication; it is the bridge between inspiration and action. The action axis relates to the outer world, or doing. The assimilation axis is objective and neutral. It provides a resource for the other axes and helps integrate them.
The classification of soul types into four axes based on dominant universal qualities provides a valuable framework for understanding their inherent characteristics and orientations. Here are some additional insights and comments regarding the four axes:
Inspiration Axis (Servers and Priests): The inspiration axis is associated with the inner world and the realm of spiritual and emotional experiences. Servers and Priests, as Inspirational roles, are attuned to this axis. They possess qualities that inspire and uplift others, drawing from a deep well of empathy, compassion, and spiritual connection. They often serve as guides, healers, and sources of inspiration, offering support and nurturing to others.
Expression Axis (Artisans and Sages): The expression axis focuses on manifesting the inner world and bringing it into the outer realm. Artisans and Sages, as Expressive roles, excel in creatively expressing their thoughts, emotions, and unique perspectives. They are adept at communication, whether through art, storytelling, or captivating conversations. They serve as bridges between the inner realm of inspiration and the outer realm of action.
Action Axis (Warriors and Kings): The action axis pertains to engaging with the outer world and the realm of doing. Warriors and Kings, as Action roles, embody qualities of leadership, decisiveness, and active participation in the world. They excel in taking direct action, making things happen, and implementing their visions. They are natural drivers of change and catalysts for progress.
Assimilation Axis (Scholars): The assimilation axis is neutral and serves as a resource for the other axes. Scholars, as the Assimilative role, possess a natural inclination for gathering and integrating knowledge, experiences, and insights. They provide objectivity and a comprehensive understanding of the world, assisting in the assimilation of information across the other axes. Scholars contribute to the overall balance and harmony of the soul types by offering a grounded perspective and facilitating integration.
Cardinal or Ordinal
Cardinal and ordinal roles or soul types refer to different orientations or approaches individuals may have in their spiritual journeys. Here are brief definitions of each:
Cardinal roles or soul types are associated with individuals who have a wide-focused and visionary orientation. They are often characterized by their ability to see the big picture, articulate compelling visions, and inspire others. Cardinal individuals excel in leadership, innovation, and global impact. They have a natural inclination towards being on stage, initiating change, and making a broad and transformative impact in their spiritual pursuits.
Ordinal roles or soul types are associated with individuals who have a narrowly-focused and intimate connection-oriented orientation. They excel in establishing deep one-on-one connections, fostering empathy, and providing personalized guidance and support. Ordinal individuals often prioritize attention to detail, introspection, and individualized growth. They enjoy cultivating meaningful relationships and find fulfillment in the depth and intimacy of spiritual connections.
The ordinal roles are Server, Artisan, and Warrior. They prefer to delve deeply into specific subjects, experiences, or relationships, seeking to understand them on a profound level. They have a keen eye for detail and appreciate the intricacies and nuances within their areas of interest. They may enjoy analyzing, dissecting, and exploring the finer points of spiritual teachings or practices.
The cardinal roles are Sage, Priest, and King. They see the interconnectedness of various aspects of life and often have a long-term perspective. They are comfortable addressing large audiences and sharing their ideas and insights with others, and have the potential to be influential figures, inspiring others through their passion, charisma, and ability to articulate their vision. They can motivate people to take action and create positive change.
In a yin/yang arrangement, the cardinal and ordinal roles are paired together in complementary opposites. The yin/yang concept is rooted in Chinese philosophy and represents the duality and interdependence of opposing forces. In the context of cardinal and ordinal soul types, the pairs are as follows:
Priests (Cardinal) and Servers (Ordinal): This pairing represents the yin/yang balance of inspiration and service. Priests bring visionary inspiration and spiritual guidance, while Servers offer nurturing support and practical assistance.
Sages (Cardinal) and Artisans (Ordinal): Sages and Artisans represent the yin/yang balance of expression and creativity. Sages focus on an outward manifestation of wit, wisdom, and engaging communication, while Artisans bring introspection and their innermost artistic expressions to life.
Kings (Cardinal) and Warriors (Ordinal): The pairing of Kings and Warriors reflects the yin/yang balance of leadership and action. Kings provide assertive leadership and strategic vision, while Warriors bring physical prowess and determination in executing tasks.
Scholars (Neutral): Scholars stand alone as the neutral role and do not have a direct yin/yang pairing. They possess qualities of both yin and yang, embodying a balance of assimilation, knowledge-seeking, and introspection.
The roles progress from most ordinal to most cardinal in this order:
Compatibility With Other Roles
In general, individuals with ordinal roles of the same type have a natural understanding and get along well with each other. For example, Artisans may connect easily with other Artisans, and Warriors find common ground with fellow Warriors. There is a mutual resonance and shared perspective between them. On the other hand, collisions of ego are more likely to occur among individuals with cardinal roles. Two Kings together may result in excessive authority and metaphorical clashes of chainmail. Two Sages often compete for the center stage or top billing in a film. Two Priests may engage in a rivalry over moral leadership.
Roles that are paired together under the same axis also exhibit compatibility. For instance, the pairing of Artisan and Sage, both being expression roles, can make excellent playmates, sharing a similar creative and communicative energy. Similarly, Servers and Priests, belonging to the inspiration roles, align in their shared focus on service and striving for higher ideals. Warriors and Kings, as action roles, can come together harmoniously, whether lockstep in a field of battle or in pursuit of a lucrative company merger.
Understanding the dynamics of these soul type combinations provide insights into how different roles complement and support each other in various contexts, whether it's creative collaborations, service-oriented endeavors, or ambitious pursuits.
Soul Types & Inputs
Inputs refer to the channels or avenues through which individuals process and receive information from their environment and internal experiences. These inputs are associated with the different soul types or roles and influence how individuals perceive, interpret, and interact with the world around them. Each soul type has a specific number of inputs, representing their unique way of gathering and processing information.
Scholars, Kings, and Warriors—the “solid” roles—have ONE input.
• WARRIORS primarily rely on a single channel of input tuned to the current reality. This channel allows them to be highly focused, alert, and aware of the details and dynamics of their immediate environment. Warriors possess a keen sense of observation and are quick to assess and respond to the practical aspects of their surroundings. They excel in maintaining clarity amidst chaos, making decisive choices, and taking direct action. This channel enables Warriors to be efficient problem-solvers, effective leaders in emergency situations, and adept at strategizing and executing plans.
• KINGS, like Warriors, also rely on a single channel of input focused on the current reality. This channel allows them to have a heightened awareness of the current circumstances and the individuals within their sphere of influence. Kings possess a natural authority and a strong sense of responsibility towards their dominion, be it a family, a group, or a larger organization. They excel in making decisions that consider the well-being and needs of those under their care. This channel enables Kings to provide stability, establish order, and inspire loyalty and respect through their actions and decisions.
• SCHOLARS, too, primarily utilize a single channel of input that is attuned to the current reality. This channel allows them to focus their attention on the details, facts, and information that pertain to their current interests or pursuits. Scholars possess a thirst for knowledge and a natural inclination to accumulate information and understand the workings of the world around them. They excel in research, analysis, and the acquisition of specialized knowledge in their chosen fields. This channel enables Scholars to be precise, objective, and thorough in their exploration and communication of ideas.
By relying on a single channel of input, Warriors, Kings, and Scholars can allocate their cognitive resources more efficiently, enabling them to concentrate on specific aspects of their environment or goals. While Warriors focus on the practical aspects and taking direct action, Kings concentrate on the individuals under their care and making responsible decisions, and Scholars emphasize gathering and analyzing information to deepen their understanding.
Servers and Priests have TWO inputs.
Current Reality: The channel tuned to the current reality allows Servers to be highly aware of their surroundings and the needs of others in their immediate environment. They possess a natural attentiveness and sensitivity to the physical and emotional states of those around them. This channel enables Servers to respond with practicality and care, offering support, nurturing, and assistance to meet the immediate needs of others. They are often skilled at providing practical help, comforting gestures, and acts of service.
Sense of the Common Good: The second channel for Servers is described as being tuned to a sense of the "common good." This channel allows Servers to have a broader perspective beyond the immediate situation and consider the welfare and well-being of the collective. Servers often possess a strong moral compass and a deep sense of empathy and compassion. They are inclined to act in ways that benefit the larger community or serve a greater cause. This channel guides their decisions and actions, leading them to prioritize the welfare of others and contribute to the betterment of society.
Current Reality: Similar to Servers, Priests have a channel tuned to the immediate situation, enabling them to be attentive and responsive to the needs and emotions of those around them. They possess a heightened ability to connect with others on an emotional level and offer support and guidance. This channel allows Priests to provide comfort, counsel, and understanding to individuals who may be going through challenging circumstances or seeking spiritual guidance.
Sense of the Higher Good: The second channel for Priests is associated with their sense of the "higher good" or a spiritual perspective. This channel allows Priests to tap into a broader understanding of spirituality, morality, and the interconnectedness of all beings. It guides their actions and conversations with a sense of purpose, aiming to inspire and uplift others towards their spiritual growth and a greater connection with something beyond the immediate and material. Priests often have a deep desire to foster spiritual awakening, offer guidance on life's deeper questions, and support others in their spiritual journeys.
These channels contribute to the unique qualities and strengths of Servers and Priests, influencing their interactions, motivations, and perspectives. While Servers focus on practical assistance and the well-being of others in the immediate context, Priests extend their concerns to a higher purpose and the spiritual aspects of life.
Sages have THREE inputs.
Current Reality: In addition to being attentive to the present moment, Sages may use this channel to gather sensory details, observe social dynamics, and adapt their communication style to suit the situation. They can be quick to pick up on cues and respond in a way that maintains engagement and captures attention.
Act/Performance: Sages excel at expressing their creativity and wisdom through their performances. This channel allows them to access their comedic, dramatic, or persuasive abilities. They may consciously manage their tone, body language, and timing to enhance the impact of their delivery and captivate their audience.
Monitoring Audience: Sages possess an intuitive sense of how their audience is responding to their words and actions. This channel enables them to read the energy of the room, adjust their approach, and make real-time connections with individuals. They may fine-tune their performance based on the feedback they receive, ensuring that their message resonates with their listeners.
Artisans have FIVE inputs.
Current Reality: Artisans are attuned to the details and aesthetics of their surroundings. They may have a heightened sensitivity to sensory inputs such as colors, textures, sounds, and spatial arrangements. This channel allows them to capture the essence of their environment and incorporate it into their creative expressions.
Multiple Background Processes: Artisans have a rich inner world where ideas and creative connections are constantly being made. They may perceive patterns, associations, and possibilities that others might overlook. This channel allows them to synthesize diverse inputs, draw from various sources of inspiration, and create unique combinations of elements.
Creative Exploration: Artisans may use their channels to explore different artistic mediums, techniques, or styles. They may have a natural inclination to experiment, innovate, and push boundaries in their artistic endeavors. This channel enables them to tap into their intuition and explore new avenues for self-expression.
Emotional Connection: Artisans often infuse their creations with a deep emotional and intuitive understanding. They may use their channels to access and convey emotions, allowing their art to evoke specific feelings or resonate with others on an emotional level.
Expression of Beauty: The fifth input pertains to the expression of beauty. Artisans have a particular sensitivity to beauty and aesthetics, and this input allows them to channel their innate sense of beauty into their creative works. They have an ability to perceive and manifest beauty in various forms, bringing a unique aesthetic quality to their creations.
These five inputs collectively contribute to the artistic and creative prowess of Artisans, enabling them to explore, synthesize, and express their unique visions and perspectives in the world of art and self-expression.

Secondary Role Influences: The Seven Types of Each Soul
In the Michael Teachings, every soul type is influenced by secondary roles, which mainly stem from the Essence Twin (ET) and primary casting within the soul group or entity.
When the Essence Twin is not currently incarnated, their energy can noticeably bleed through and impact the individual. However, if the Essence Twin is incarnate, their influence is more subtle and may not be visually apparent in the person's eyes and facial expression. In such cases, the primary casting takes on a more prominent role as a secondary influence, casting a metaphorical backlighting on the individual's primary role. This contrast can be observed when comparing photos. Each role manifests in various types or variations, and these can be visually identified.
For instance, an Artisan may encompass seven distinct types: Artisan/Server, Artisan/Artisan, Artisan/Warrior, Artisan/Scholar, Artisan/Sage, Artisan/Priest, and Artisan/King. In other words, there are seven types of artisans. The same principle applies to the other roles, as they all allow variations of SEVEN unique types.
Here's an example of Artisan/King.
Compare this with Artisan/Sage.
Observe the distinction in the eyes. While both groups of individuals appear as artisans, the variation becomes evident due to the influence of their secondary roles. The reasons behind this phenomenon are speculative and may not withstand scientific examination, as metaphysics is the realm in which it operates. If you're reading this, however, you're probably fine with that.
Roles as Energy Wave-Lengths
The variations in role energy resemble waves, with the primary role interacting with the influence of the essence twin and casting, resulting in certain energies being reinforced or canceled out. When the essence twin is discarnate, it exerts a stronger influence, while the influence of casting (although it is always there) will seem more prominent when the essence twin is incarnate.
This phenomenon of energy interference, observed in various wave-related fields like acoustics, optics, and electromagnetic waves, may apply to role energy. Within each role, seven distinct types or variations can be identified, such as Server/Artisan, Warrior/Sage, Priest/Scholar, and so on. The influence of essence twin and casting is present in each role type, adding a unique flavor.
Explore the Role Photos (or Soul Types) page for more information on the seven types of each role.
Secondary Role Influence (Examples)
The variations in secondary soul type energy combining with the primary role add depth, complexity, and unique qualities to the overall expression of the soul. It's like blending different colors together to create a more intricate and nuanced palette.
The secondary role influences bring forth additional characteristics, tendencies, and perspectives that interact with the primary role. They can amplify certain aspects, temper others, or introduce new dimensions to the soul's expression. This blending of energies creates a rich tapestry of traits and qualities within an individual.
In essence, the variations in secondary role energy blend with the primary role to create a multidimensional and colorful expression of the soul. It enhances the richness and uniqueness of each individual's journey, contributing to the beauty and intricacy of their overall soul experience.
Here are some examples of how secondary role influences and casting are significant in shaping individual variations within each primary role.
• A Server with a secondary Artisan influence may display artistic talents and a focus on creating beauty while still embodying the nurturing qualities of a Server.
• An Artisan with a secondary Warrior influence might bring a more assertive and action-oriented approach to their artistic endeavors, combining creativity with a drive for accomplishment.
• A Warrior with a secondary Priest influence may demonstrate a strong sense of justice and a commitment to serving others, channeling their warrior energy into compassionate leadership and guiding others towards empowerment and spiritual growth.
• A Scholar with a secondary King influence may possess a natural inclination towards leadership and a strategic mindset. They excel in acquiring knowledge, organizing information, and applying it to make informed decisions, combining the scholarly pursuit of understanding with a regal sense of authority and command.
• A Sage with a secondary Scholar influence may exhibit a thirst for knowledge and a love for sharing wisdom through engaging communication, blending the expressive qualities of a Sage with the analytical and studious nature of a Scholar.
• A Priest with a secondary Artisan influence may embody a unique blend of spiritual devotion and creative expression. They may infuse their priestly role with a touch of artistry, using their intuitive and inspirational abilities to create meaningful rituals, ceremonies, or artistic works that inspire and uplift others. Their priestly presence may be accompanied by a flair for artistic expression, adding a touch of beauty and aesthetic to their spiritual practices.
• A King with a secondary Warrior influence embodies a powerful combination of leadership and strength. They possess a commanding presence and a natural ability to take charge, coupled with a proactive and assertive approach to achieving their goals. Their kingly authority is infused with a warrior's determination, courage, and readiness to overcome obstacles and protect their realm. They inspire others through their decisive actions and ability to lead with both confidence and resilience.
No Hierarchy of Roles
Just as we emphasize the inherent worth and equality of every individual, regardless of their specific characteristics or qualities, one soul type is not better than another. This notion of equality extends beyond just soul types and can be applied to various aspects of human diversity, including race, gender, ethnicity, or any other characteristic that distinguishes individuals.
All roles are chosen pre-incarnationally and are not granted as a special endowment or mark of importance. They are just different ways of being.
