Understanding the
Michael Chart

An Analysis of a Student Profile


Excerpt from a Michael Teleconference with Shepherd Hoodwin

One of the more advanced uses of the Michael Teachings is to start putting it all together. Sometimes weíll see students in the community arguing about a particular Michael trait Ė- an overleaf or a role or a soul age or whatever Ė- and say, ďWell, this person canít possibly have this trait because theyíre like this!Ē and I think that that is an excessively literal and inorganic way of working with the teachings. What really gives a better picture of it is when you start to look at the chart as a whole unit because every trait interacts with every other trait.

Using Gloria's Michael profile, Iím going to make some very general comments on the chart as a whole, highlighting the things that jump out to me.

Gloria: A Sage & Honorary Priest

One of the things that is immediately striking about Gloriaís chart is that even though sheís a Sage -- and anyone who knows her can see the obvious Sageliness of her: she was an opera singer, she can be dramatic and expressive Ė-  when students met her in person they thought that she was a Priest. Weíve discussed on the Michael Teachings list how sometimes your casting and/or your essence twin energy (your secondary energies) will jump out at people first, and you need to study them a little bit more to see what is really going on.

In my terminology then, Gloria is an honorary Priest, and that term is used only when the person has both a Priest (or whatever) essence twin and their primary casting Ė- their cadence position -Ė is Priest.

Primary Casting (6/7/1)

Now I know that the numbers Ė- the casting, the cadence numbers Ė- are really confusing to a lot of people, but itís actually quite a simple concept. Just imagine that each of us is in a group of seven, and itís a permanent group of seven. Weíre actually a member of a lot of different kinds of groups of seven. Some of them are temporary or some of them are secondary, they maybe go across the whole cadre that weíre in or even across a whole cadre group. So for sake of clarity letís call this your primary cadence, the core one, and according to the Michael Math chapter of More Messages from Michael, these will all be the same role. I donít know that that is the case 100% of the time, but weíll just assume for the sake of study here that Gloria is in a group of seven Sages, and they have numbered off one through seven, and Gloria is in the number six position.

So six is the Priest number. Okay, why is it the Priest number? Well this is very elegant the way that this all works together. The roles are ranked from one to seven based on the most ordinal to the least ordinal. I think most of you know what I mean by the word ordinal. Ordinal is down-to-earth and has to do with the concrete, the specific, the nitty-gritty. Itís like on your camera -Ė if you put a zoom lens on it, you zoom in as much as you can, thatís like the most ordinal role, which is Server. And so the number one is Server, itís the most ordinal, but the funny thing about that is that because it comes first, numerically itís the most cardinal. So when you see the number one come up, it resonates with the role of Server, but it is the most cardinal, itís the most influential because it comes first. I know thatís a little tricky to wrap your brain around, but thatís how it works.

And so then two is Artisan, and thatís the second most ordinal. Three is Warrior, itís the third most ordinal, and then we get to four. Four is right in the middle. Itís neither ordinal nor cardinal, and of course thatís the Scholar role which is neutral; itís neither ordinal nor cardinal.

Then you get to number five, which is Sage, and even though it resonates with the cardinal role of Sage Ė- itís the least cardinal of the three cardinal roles, but itís still cardinal Ė- because itís in the second half of the numbers, the number five functions ordinally. And the elegance of this is that it gives souls a way to do -- for example, in this case, Sage energy Ė- without being cardinal. Thereís an ordinal way to do Sage energy, or when you have the actual Sage role coming through, either through your role or your essence twin, then you get to do it the cardinal way. So you can see that the Tao is covering all of its bases in this regard.

Okay, then six is Priest, and seven is King. And so if you have someone who is King-cast, theyíre like in the seventh position of their primary cadence, they will have a Kingly flavour about them. It may be theyíre bossy, or theyíre well-organized, or theyíre sharp or whatever. That energy will be there, but they are doing it in a cardinal way so theyíre not using that energy to run the whole world, they might be using that in a one-on-one relationship, so you see it can go both ways there.

So Gloria is a Sage with a Priest essence twin. Now when your essence twin is discarnate Ė- meaning they are not in a physical body at the moment Ė- thatís when you get the highest amount of what you call bleed-through. In other words, because theyíre not busy living in their own body, itís almost like a piece of them is living in you, and they rub off on you, and people will look at you and theyíll see a lot of that energy. I mean if you know Gloria well, you know sheís a sage, but thereís an awful lot of that Priest quality coming through. And so that that Priest energy bleeding through with the Sage makes her energies quite cardinal, because Sage is cardinal, Priest is even more cardinal, and King is the most cardinal.

So Gloriaís a very cardinal person, but her casting is ordinal. That means that sheís not going to be a hundred-percent-cardinal person. Sheís going to have tools to do the nitty-gritty, one-on-one ordinal stuff through her casting. And because not only does she have that energy bleeding through from her essence twin, she has Priest casting and itís doubled, and so she is an honorary Priest. She can do the Priest in a cardinal way because of the essence twin bleed-through, and she can do it in an ordinal way because of the casting. So, as a Sage, sheís already going to be very comfortable getting up on stage, singing, inspiring people with that Priest energy in a large-scale way but she can also sit down with you one-on-one and do counseling and not feel that sheís not reaching enough people, because the ordinal casting lets you do it on a one-on-one.

Secondary Casting

So weíve got the cadence, your group of seven, and that primary cadence is in a group of seven of those; seven sevens, seven cadences, and that is called a greater cadence. And the whole cadence has a position in that string. In Gloriaís case you see the middle number out of those three numbers. It starts ďcadence positionĒ, that was six, then ďcadence sevenĒ, and thatís the King position, also ordinal, even though it resonates with King.

One thing that is really fascinating that was mentioned in the Michael Math chapter in Yarbro, is that if you have a six or a seven or both, in one or both of these two positions, you have a particular hardwiring as a soul for channeling. Why? Because on the physical plane we do the first five soul ages. Youíre an old soul: thatís the fifth soul age, right? Infantís first, Babyís second, Young is third, Mature is fourth (the Scholar level), and Old is fifth, (thatís the Sage level), and then the sixth level is the level of the transcendental soul (which are almost always Priests) and thatís from the astral; from like a recombined entity on the upper astral. And so when you have six casting, you are plugging right into the astral plane. And then when you have seven, that goes along to the causal.

The causal plane is the level of the infinite soul, although itís stepping down from the high planes. Itís a little bit complicated here so donít worry about that. An infinite soul is a representative of either the mental plane which is the fifth plane, the messianic plane which is the sixth plane, or the Buddhaic plane which is the seventh plane, but it steps down, you know all of these things have to step down, you know you go like an electrical transformer; you have to step down the energy. So the seven connects into the infinite soul and the causal plane. And so anyone with a seven casting here is a natural channel to the causal plane.

So whenever I see someone with a chart with a six and seven in this position I know that itís sort of like having a cable modem rather than having to use an antenna. I donít have any six or seven casting; mineís five-four-three, so Iím channeling basically with a really strong antenna in my brain, and itís probably harder on my body because I donít have that innate casting. But what Gloria has here is this built-in wiring to the astral and the causal plane. That doesnít mean that everyone who has this will channel; itís just that itís a capability thatís there if the personality wants to use it in that lifetime.

My hero is Steven Sondheim. Heís a brilliant Old Scholar composer of musical theatre, and he has this on his chart, and heís a typical East-coast Jewish intellectual who doesnít believe in anything New-Age, and yet he has that built-in thing, and he has written some incredible songs, he doesnít even know what he put in those songs; itís like he partly channeled them. One is called, ďNo-one Is AloneĒ and itís about our spirit guides and I had a chance to meet him once, and I donít remember if I asked him; somebody asked him if he believes in the afterlife because he wrote this thing. He says no, he doesnít believe in it at all, but he wrote a song about it because it was Ė- what he told himself intellectually was Ė- that it was right for those characters. So the casting is really useful and fascinating information on a lot of different levels.

Okay, so that second number there, that King secondary casting, is a little less powerful in Gloriaís life than the first number but itís still quite significant. But each of us are like a multifaceted diamond, so different sides of us show up from different angles and different distances. Itís sort of like if you have one of those disco balls hanging around, that keep moving, so you notice different things from different angles. According to Sarah Chambers, your cadenceís position in your greater cadence highlights that trait when in the presence of people close to you. In other words friends and family will really notice your cadenceís position in the greater cadence, your secondary casting.

So people close to Gloria  Ė- despite her striking Sage and Priest stuff -- are going to notice that. But theyíre going to also notice some Kingliness about her. Like maybe the people who work with her are going to think, ďYou know, Gloria has got it handled. Sheís going to follow through.Ē Seven is a lot about completing things because itís the seventh out of seven. And Kings are good at that; Kings are saying, ďOkay, the buck stops here. I will handle this.Ē And thereís just also a feeling of ďIím in control, Iím in charge. Iím going to get all the pieces put together and youíre part of that, so I will organize you to make things work.Ē Even though it resonates with a cardinal role itís done in an ordinal way here. So people will notice some Kingly qualities about Gloria even though itís not that significant, ultimately, because Sage is first and Priest comes as a strong second, but we want to look at that.

Tertiary Casting

Now, her greater cadence is going to be in a string of greater cadences. Again weíre going to assume this is all Sages, although nothing is that cut and dried, so sometimes it wonít be organized in that way. But weíll just assume that there are several groups of forty-nine Sages in Gloriaís entity, and her third number there tells us that sheís in the first group of that forty-nine. Whenever youíre in a first greater cadence, itís pushed to the front, and that underlines the other two numbers because this is the first place in that group of Sages, within the entity, that the six and seven position has manifested. So itís really more in your face, itís underlined, itís not, in a sense, mixing it in with other influences where if you had a higher number in that third position it might.

Also, one is a Server number. Because itís the third out of three here itís the weakest influence, but we also have to say that after Sage, Priest and King, thereís a little bit of the Server in Gloria. It gives her a little bit more of an ability to toil on behalf of the common good; to help everyone out. You might see this in the way that Gloria is a caretaker for several cats: that caring, taking them to the vetís, doing sorts of things. I donít want to oversell this; itís not a huge influence but every flavor that comes up in the top half of the chart is your essence Ė- your soul Ė- so itís permanent all your lifetimes. Anything there is a factor. Itís going to show up one way or another.

Entities and Cadres

Now another part of your casting is your entityís position within a cadre. Your entity is your spiritual family. Itís a group of one to two thousand souls, and anyone within your entity is like your brother or sister. And although Yarbro says that stereotypically an entity has two to five roles, in the cadres that many of us are in I have found that all seven roles tend to be represented in every entity. So this is something you can argue about but thereís no way to really prove it one way or another, but Iím just going to say that that is what has come up in my channeling.

Gloria is in a cadre that many of us are in, itís called cadre 1. Michael through me has called it cadre 3 in order to give an absolute number to a couple of straggler cadres from a cadre group (which is twelve cadres) that otherwise have cycled off. And those cadres are not per se Michael students, although some of their members are. I have some close friends in cadres 1 and 2, in fact my younger brother is in cadre 1. So I asked, when I first started channeling, for a system of numbering cadres that would give a unique number to every cadre, so there would be no question as to whether person A and person B were in the same cadre or not, and when I started channeling in 1986, you werenít getting any sort of clear numbers as to exactly which cadre a person was in. Most of the Michael students were all in the same cadre, which Iím calling cadre 3 here. And so if I did a chart on someone who was not in that cadre, I wanted a way to know exactly where they were relative to where I was. So thatís how that got started. The more common method, of calling what Iím calling cadre 3, cadre 1, is that it was the cadre that most of the earliest Michael students were and are in, and itís also first in itís position within twelve cadres, (or the Yarbro people would say seven cadres), which is a greater cadre in their terminology. I think itís possible to be a member of both a group of seven and a group of twelve.

So I think Iíve probably confused and lost some of you, whose brains overload with numbers very easily. This is all being recorded; it will be on the website; you can listen to it again, and for now Iíll just say, ďDonít worry about it okay, weíll move on from there.Ē But your cadre number does not have any implications in terms of casting on the one to seven system, at least not the way that Iím using it here. Itís not one to seven; itís one to infinity. But, every entity number Ė the second number there like where it says for Gloria 3-4: the second number is a four Ė that is on a scale of one to seven. And whenever something is on a scale of one to seven it has a casting meaning or implication.

The Fourth Entity

Gloria is in an entity that is fourth out of seven. Four we know is the scholar number; it's the scholar position. Now that particular entity doesn't have a lot of scholars in it, but what being in the middle does is give the feeling that you are a balancer, because you're in the middle and you're mediating between the first half of the cadre and the second. There's almost server quality in that particular entity; it's gentle, it's sweet, and it just so happens that many people in that entity are considered to be very pleasing to look at, like Christopher Reeves, for instance, who was an artisan in that entity. He was just so beautiful to look at and Gloria is beautiful, too, as are many people in that entity. Not all of them, of course, and that's an important point. Just about anything that you can generalize about in the Michael teachings or what you've observed from your experience, may be true some of the time, a lot of the time, but its not going to be true all the time, and why is that: all is choice. This chart here has about twenty-one pieces of information that all counter balance each other. So there are tendencies and that's all you can say about it.

Now the scholar casting of this entity is very generalized and not something that will grab you overtly. But whatever entity number you're in leaves a general impression on people that jumps out at them, whether or not they are strangers or acquaintances. People who don't know Gloria very well may sense her innate fourness and notice her scholarly traits. They may read her posts on the list and think, "Wow, that was very informative and educational." 

Truth, Love & Beauty

Entities are divided into three sections, and this is fairly new material channeled by JP Van Hulle that as far as I know is not in any of the books yet. JP actually channeled some quite technical material about blocks and rows that I don't entirely understand yet, but one piece I added to my charts is what side of the entity a person is on.

From the Tao there are three forces that emanate into eternity into the dimensional universe and these three forces are love, truth, and beauty. Sometimes beauty is referred to as energy instead -- love, truth, energy; same thing. Love is the manifestation of the Tao through what we think of emotional or higher emotion; truth is the manifestation of the Tao through intellect or higher intellect, and beauty is the manifestation of the Tao through form or energy.

Now if you are a server or priest you naturally resonate with emotions of love, this is true, but if you're on the truth side of your entity -- think of the entity as a pie divided into three sections -- and you're in the truth neighborhood, you're going to have a personal, individual, and special relationship with truth. Truth is just a more important and dominant quality to you. This may mean that you're more blunt at times -- not that you're less loving -- and you value truth more than the other traits, even if you're a Priest, to the point that you might say something that you feel is true even if it might hurt someone's feelings. Conversely, if you are on the love side, and already a Priest, it's going to double that quality about you, and you may be more apt to avoid saying the thing you feel is true because you want to show more compassion to people. If you're on the beauty side of that entity you might have more energy in your body, commune more with nature, and surround yourself with beautiful things.

Now if you're on the part of your entity that borders two sides then you can have two out of three energies. Gloria, like me, is on the love/truth side of her entity, and both of us are always trying to integrate love and truth. I know I am always trying to do that: how can I be truthful and compassionate; how can I say this thing that needs to be said but in the kindest possible way.

The Overleaves: Hard and Soft Influences

One way to look at a chart is to notice the hard influences versus the soft influences. The hard influences mean more focused, more intense, more problematic, more aggressive, whatever. Those are very potent. If you see many hard influences on a chart, you know that person has a lot to deal with in order to reign in all that power and energy. The soft influences, or the neutral ones, which I think of as being more soft, will be more in the background.

High male energy, for example, would be considered a more focused or harder influence. In the overleaves, dominance is a strong one; discrimination is a strong one; and the attitudes, cynic and skeptic: those have a kind of bite to them and are some of the more difficult overleaves. Some people do them very well and you hardly even notice them, while other people have a lot of trouble with them.

Aggression and power mode come on very strong: aggression tends to fly off the handle; power mode tends to bear down too much on other people. Some of the active body types are also strong, especially the martial body type which can leave an explosive quality to the personality. The young soul age is another example; young is the third soul age, three is the warrior number, it's the warrior time. Young souls, although they can be just as enlightened and as wonderful as human beings as anyone else, when that energy is not tamed and harnessed, that can have that same challenging nature that the warrior and king energies can have as souls.

The Power Mode

The only really intense overleaf that we have on Gloria's chart is the power mode. Notice that sage is the cardinal side of the expression axis, and power is the cardinal side of the expression axis; when you see that reinforcement it makes it stronger. Since power is already a natural overleaf for the role of sage, when you have it as an actual overleaf it's doubled in effect. When a sage in power mode expresses an opinion they're going to sound twice as opinionated as they probably meant it to be. They probably think they're just expressing their opinion but it comes out amplified because cardinal amplifies and it's the cardinal side of the expression axis which also amplifies expression; so with Gloria you have a very amplified expression of her expressions.

Otherwise, there's a lot of mellow things in Gloria's chart, with spiritualist the most mellowing influence you can have, and the goal of flow, neutral and easy-going.

The Chief Feature of Impatience

The other edgy overleaf on Gloria's is the chief feature of impatience, which is on the same side as the action axis as king; it's the king chief feature. Anything on the king side is going to be intense because it's the most cardinal place on the chart. Other overleafs on the King side, such as the goal of dominance and the aggression mode, can be very problematic. The moving center is not something you would necessarily have a problem with, but its the king center, so if you're moving centered you take action a lot -- which is exactly what kings do. So when someone has heavy impatience, you're going to think of all the king stuff.

Carolyn Myss and Shirley Maclaine, for example, are sages according to my channeling with extreme impatience. They're both very charismatic and expressive, but you can tell they get testy with people quite easily, with a king-like feeling of "Don't waste my time! What are you stupid? Get out of my way!" Some people have thought that indicates that they are priests, but I don't feel priest energy there. Your mileage may vary.

So this gives you an overview of how the various components of a chart work together with each other. Flow and spiritualist, of course, are very easy and don't clash with most other overleaves; although, If you have discrimination with spiritualist that can be a little schizophrenic; I actually see that quite a bit.

A sage in the intellectual center, and sages are already very articulate,  will just make them more so, because the intellectual center gives access to words very quickly and easily. If you are a sage or scholar you have that anyway, so the intellectual center just underlines that.
